Turtle watching

Five out of the seven species of sea turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka, making it an ideal location to go turtle watching. There are four main turtle watching destinations in Sri Lanka.

  • Rekawa – This small fishing village is a vital eco tourism venue located about 10 kms east of the south coast town of Tangalla.
  • Beruwala – Located 50 kms south of Colombo, Beruwala marks the beginning of a 130 km stretch of beach front tourism in southern Sri Lanka.
  • Induruwa – Located 70 kms south of Colombo, Induruwa is an area where stretches of endless sandy beach meet with lush greenery.
  • Kosgoda – Kosgoda is a beautiful village on the south west coast of Sri Lanka. The Kosgoda Turtle Care centre functions mainly as a hatchery and makes huge efforts to increase the rate of hatching and survival of baby turtles at their initial stages. However, the care centre also works on sick and injured adults, treating them and releasing them back into the ocean. It is a great place to learn about and love nature while also having fun getting hands-on experience. A must visit place!
